Season Review: “I Juan To Improve” – Mata

Mata clocked up 54 appearances for Chelsea in his debut season, impressive on all accounts since his £24m move from Valencia in the summer.

He scored twelve goals, including one on his debut versus Norwich, and notched a notable twenty-one assists also.

As well as scoring on his league debut, he netted the second on his Champions League debut, against Bayer Leverkusen in early September.

Right Back To Business…

With Jose Bosingwa set for an exit from Chelsea. The next logical signing would be a right-sided defender, and here, I’ll look at a few of the many names that have been mentioned.

You might remember, in early April, I looked at Cezar Apzilicueta, the Marseille right-back, who has impressed a lot this season, a caught the eye of many European giants.

With hard work already being completed in the transfer market, Roman Abramovich is obviously pulling strings behind the scenes, with Marin and Hazard already added to the squad, along with possibly Hulk over the next few days.

However, Roman is neglecting a pair of Chelsea legends, who have arguably steered a rocking ship to one of the best seasons in the modern era. Both Di Matteo and Eddie Newton have been key to the change in fortunes, and Blues fans all over the world are pleading to give DI Matteo the full-time job, although Roman is extremely keen on poaching Pep Guardiola after him leaving Barcelona this summer.

The 23 year old has been something of an unpublicised prodigy since breaking into the Borussia Monchengladbach side aged 18.

The attacking midfielder/winger has never been a true goalscorer, scoring no more than 4 goals in a Bundesliga season since his arrival on the scene, but what he lacks in goals, he provides in assists, as he has notched up over 10 in each of his three seasons at the top tier, including 18 in the 09/10 season.
