Chelsea ace refused English international call-up despite Jack Grealish’s setback

England boss Gareth Southgate has decided not to call up Raheem Sterling amidst injury to Jack Grealish

As per the Daily Mail, Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling is set to remain out of the England squad for the September international break despite injuries to Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander Arnold.

Gareth Southgate has decided to go against calling Sterling for the games against Ukraine in Saturday’s Euro 2024 qualifier and Scotland in a prestige friendly in Glasgow next Tuesday.

It was thought an injury to Grealish could open the gate for Sterling to be called back into the England squad, but that hasn’t been the case regardless of Sterling’s form this season. In some ways, it is good news for us, helping us conserve Sterling’s energy and have him fit and raring to go when the Premier League returns.

The 28-year-old is Chelsea’s top scorer in the last four games with two goals and an assist. His performance should have been convincing enough to be called up for the Three Lions team.

Sterling has not played for England since the 2022 FIFA World Cup as he was out in March due to injury. Now the FA has revealed Southgate won’t call Grealish and the Liverpool right-back’s replacements, shattering any hopes the Chelsea star had of joining up..

The former Liverpool forward may find it frustrating, but it will offer him more time to work on his weak points before the following Chelsea matches. With just one victory in the previous four games, the Blues have had trouble winning games this season, and Mauricio Pochettino appears to be under pressure to make amends following the end of the international break.

Before that game, he has a lot on his plate, and the club’s supporters will be looking for a fresh start after recent bad performances. The attacker will now have to wait for the following West Londoners match, which is on September 17 against Bournemouth.

Had Sterling been called up for England games, he might have built up his game in order to maintain his good momentum for the next Chelsea game. Let’s hope he remains consistent with his performance in Chelsea’s next game.
