Chelsea have put Brentford striker Ivan Toney on their watch list as they remain keen on bringing in a striker despite signing Nicolas Jackson in the summer.
According to the Evening Standard, (h/t Football.London) Chelsea could move for Toney in the winter window as they hope to address their goal scoring woes. Mauricio Pochettino’s men have found the back of the net just five times in their opening four Premier League games, three of which came in one match against bottom-placed Luton Town.
The Blues have started the new season on a disappointing note, as they have registered only one win in their last four Premier League games, losing two and drawing once. The profligacy in front of the goal saw them slip to a shock loss at home against Nottingham Forest at the weekend.
Their dilemma remains scoring goals, as Chelsea failed to make the most of their chances in their recent game against Nottingham Forest. Jackson came close to handing the Blues an equaliser but fluffed his chances. Meanwhile, Armando Broja is nearing fitness and could be available after the international break. But Chelsea feels that adding another striker would add more depth.
Toney is currently serving an eight-month ban after he was caught betting and returned to action in January. The 27-year-old striker is also open to a move, with Liverpool and Arsenal keen on signing him. However, we have enough time for his signing, so it will be better to focus on games instead of player acquisition because we have to build a better squad, and if we keep adding players, it won’t make sense.
Toney has proven to be a solid striker, finishing third in goal-scoring this past season. He additionally holds Premier League experience, which can help us with our goal-scoring problems. Once he finishes his ban, there is every reason to believe the Brentford man will be eager to prove a point.
Jackson and Broja should be given time as well since they can deal with our goal-scoring problems and we still have time until the next transfer window, at which point both strikers may have found their footing and established themselves as essential members of the team. Christopher Nkunku is another player we have who can play centre forward. Because there is still plenty of time to consider this signing, let’s wait and see.
