“Less is more and more is less”- Pochettino sends a clear warning to Chelsea stars as the 2023-24 season takes shape

Mauricio Pochettino has sent a warning to Chelsea players as tough decisions await

Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that Chelsea are set to make tough decisions as he has to bring balance to the squad this summer. This could see several players sold or loaned out in the coming weeks leading up to the new season.

The Argentine manager has taken 29 players on a pre-season tour. How these stars will conduct themselves and perform will decide where they stand in the manager’s plans for the coming campaign, let alone the long-term future.

The likes of Ian Maatsen, Conor Gallagher, and Trevoh Chalobah could be shown the exit door either on loan or permanently. But it remains to be seen as Chelsea have yet to play more pre-season games.

Despite selling plenty of players during the ongoing summer window, Pochettino has confirmed the club will sell more players to lower the squad numbers. Surely this will be accompanied with players coming in to compensate for the loss in quality and experience.

Speaking to the media after the 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in pre-season, (h/t Evening Standard), the former Paris Saint-Germain manager said:

“We have 29 players here, and the squad is massive. It is about creating a squad with good balance and people who can play and can compete for their place.”

“We need 22, 23, 24, with some younger, and that’s it. I am so sorry because maybe the decision will be tough, but we need to build a good and balanced team that wants to compete for things.”

Prior to the season, we will need to make challenging decisions if we want to be a competitive squad. Pochettino will need to be ruthless for the club’s best interest because we must establish our dominance in the forthcoming campaign.

Given that our team is still a touch overcrowded, we will either loan the players out or sell them because the Argentine manager will find it difficult to use every player. It’s encouraging to see the erstwhile PSG coach be direct about Chelsea’s future and impose his control over the squad.
