Report: Mauricio Pochettino keen for club to address key handicap in the roster

Mauricio Pochettino opens up on the dearth of experience in the Chelsea squad

Mauricio Pochettino has voiced his frustration over the lack of experience in the Chelsea squad as the 2023-24 new season draws near. Several teenagers have shown in pre-season so far but their lack of experience will count when the stakes are higher.

According to the Times, (h/t Express) the Argentine manager is growing increasingly concerned over a lack of experience in midfield and the club’s slow acquisitions in the transfer market. With the kickoff against Liverpool just over two weeks away, we are no closer to making additions.

The club was dealing with a bloated squad and has done pretty well in trimming down the squad, which has seen them sell first-team players such as N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, and Mason Mount. However, this is moot given that we have failed to replace them adequately.

This has left the midfield with just Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernandez as first-team midfielders. While the trio of Andrey Santos, Cesare Casadei, and Carney Chukwuemeka are very talented, they lack experience and could do with a loan spell to boost their development.

The West Londoners are currently in negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion to sign Moises Caicedo as they look to sort out their defensive midfield area. They have also expressed interest in signing attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus from Ajax Amsterdam.

Other areas, meanwhile, are respectable enough and have quite a bit of experience. The primary concern for Chelsea has been reaffirming their midfield, which appeared exposed last season due to the large number of injured midfielders, which negatively impacted the club’s campaign as they ended 12th in the Premier League.

Given that Pochettino has expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of experience in midfield, we must give him the resources he needs for the upcoming campaign. The last thing we need is the right manager with the wrong tools to fix a broken system.

He is starting Ian Maatsen in the right midfield, which further suggests that we are lacking in the position or that he has greater faith in Maatsen than other midfielders. Signing Caicedo will be a significant boost in midfield, and we hope that Chelsea accelerates their talks with Brighton over his signing.
