Ligue 1 giants eyeing summer deal for oft-injured Chelsea attacker

Olympique Lyonnais are keen on signing Chelsea star Christian Pulisic

USMNT star Christian Pulisic could head to France, as Olympique Lyonnais are prioritising the signing of the Chelsea star in the ongoing summer transfer window.

As per French outlet L’Equipe, (h/t Mirror) Lyon are keen on signing the American star, who may join the club permanently if the deal is completed.

Pulisic has been among the players whose future has been uncertain at Chelsea, and Mauricio Pochettino is yet to decide if he wants to keep the 24-year-old. One of the best wingers on his day, injuries have largely diminished Pulisic’s impact at Stamford Bridge.

The former Borussia Dortmund star barely contributed to the Blues last season as Chelsea endured one of their poorest seasons in recent memory, finishing a disappointing 12th in the Premier League.

Chelsea hopes to sell a few more peripheral players with FFP compliance on the books. The West Londoners have spent over £500 million ($650 million) in the past two transfer windows, which has put them open to scrutiny.

With UEFA Champions League income not on the books next season, we cannot afford to overspend or retain players who do not have a future at the club. Since Pulisic has a contract with Chelsea through 2024 and the Blues don’t want to lose him for nothing, they might consider selling him if the French club makes a good offer.

As evidenced by the two goals he scored against Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League recently, Pulisic still possesses that deadly edge in front of goal. It is quite unfortunate to see him fail to make a similar impact at the Bridge.

A parting of the ways could be the best way forward for all parties. Chelsea will recoup a fee while Pulisic and Lyon can work together towards a bright future.

The French top flight is not as demanding as the Premier League and Pulisic will have a larger margin for error in Ligue 1. Whether a return to the European mainland beckons for the 24-year-old remains to be seen.
