Chelsea to pay more than release clause for Villarreal’s Nicolas Jackson

Chelsea will apparently pay more than the release clause of Nicolas Jackson as they look set to sign the Villarreal striker.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, via the Daily Star, the Blues will pay around €1-€2million more than the Senegal international’s release clause, which stands at €35million.

The player, as has been the case for new signings under Todd Boehly, will sign a ‘very long contract’ at the club. The two clubs are apparently checking documentation as a move looks to be on the cards.

That’s it then. It seems Chelsea have a new centre-forward to look forward to next season. It remains to be seen if Mauricio Pochettino will play him straightaway.

Jackson to Chelsea?

The 22-year-old is coming on the back of a great season in La Liga, where he scored 12 times in 26 league games. But those are the only La Liga goals he has scored for the Yellow Submarine, having joined them in 2019.

It is clear that he can still polish his skills and make himself better. It’s kind of like the David Datro Fofana signing, where you know there is potential but there is still uncertainty over exactly when they will come into the first team regularly.

Paying a bit over the release clause seems like a harmless way to appease Villarreal and sweeten the deal. The finances make sense, especially if Jackson goes on to fulfil his potential.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to throw him into the big leagues straightaway. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doesn’t seem like he will stay here for long while Romelu Lukaku’s future also hangs in the balance.
