Malo Gusto, who joined Chelsea in the winter transfer window for a cost of £26.3 million, suffered a serious hamstring injury and was ruled out for the entire season.
However, the right-back made the trip to England to have treatment at London Cobham. The 19-year-old has made 17 appearances for Lyon and has an assist to his name. But later the reports confirmed that he had been ruled out for 10 weeks as he was being closely monitored by Chelsea’s medical personnel.
Gusto, 19, is also anticipated to play for Lyon later in the season. And Lyon boss Laurent Blanc claimed Gusto will join Chelsea fully prepared and in high physical condition.
Commenting about the situation of the youngsters (h/t Foot Mercato), Blanc provided an update on his fitness and said:
“It’s a good thing to stay because he still has some progress to make. He will go to Chelsea even better than he is. I don’t think there is any disappointment in him.
“It’s extraordinary what is happening to him because he signs for six years at Chelsea after a year as a starter in Ligue 1. Kudos to him. Let him give us a good four months because it would do us good and it would help him too.”
Blanc is still counting on the right-back and is hoping he recovers soon and as he still has a part to play for Lyon before the end of the season. As he is rehabilitating at Chelsea, he will get to know about the team and their culture.
However, his game time will be less as Reece James will likely start most of the games at right back for Graham Potter next season since Gusto is still young and will need time to adjust to the league, as he might be used as a substitute right back for the entire season depending on his performance.
He will, however, play in the preseason, giving him a chance to get to know his new teammates and adjust to Potter’s playing style.
