Transfer News: Chelsea will target Alexis Mac Allister if they cannot secure a deal for Enzo Fernandez in January

According to The Times (subscription required) [h/t Metro], Chelsea will target Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister if they cannot secure a deal for SL Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez in January.

The Blues have signalled their intention of paying the £106 million release clause for Fernandez as Graham Potter seeks to add reinforcement to his midfield. It is also believed that the west London side are already discussing personal terms with the player.

Fernandez enjoyed a terrific World Cup with Argentina in Qatar earlier this month. The 21-year-old featured in the games for his country and was crucial in helping them lift the coveted trophy after 36 long years.

However, the Portuguese side are adamant to keep their star midfielder and will not sell him for less than a penny than his release clause. It is also claimed that the Liga Portugal side wants the amount to be paid in full.

Chelsea are negotiating with them, but if they are unable to strike a deal for the 21-year-old, the Blues will turn their attention to another Argentine playing in the Premier League, someone with whom Potter is quite familiar with.

Mac Allister too enjoyed a phenomenal tournament in Qatar as he notched up an assist in the final against France to help his side lift the cup. He will also be a far cheaper option than Fernandez.

The 24-year-old has impressed in the Premier League so far with the Seagulls and was also impressive against us during his side’s 4-1 at the Amex Stadium in October. His having played under our manager before could give us some advantage when negotiating a deal for him.

More Chelsea News:

With the current midfield an ageing one, either of the two players will be an instant upgrade. Fans will hope that the club can sign both of them, but that is highly unlikely to happen. With the January window now less than 24 hours away, it remains to be seen if the west London side can agree to a deal for either of the Argentina midfielders.
