Romelu Lukaku makes a decision on long his term future at Chelsea

According to Daily Mail Online, Romelu Lukaku has taken a firm decision on his future at Chelsea following the recent snub for the match against LOSC Lille. He was left on the bench by Thomas Tuchel as his side saw off the Ligue 1 champions by a 2-0 scoreline in the UEFA Champions League without his services.

Speaking after the match, the Blues boss was adamant that his decision to drop Lukaku from the starting lineup was because of fatigue. However, the attacker himself believes he was ready to feature in the match. That has resulted in uncertainty regarding the £97.5million signing’s future at Stamford Bridge.

And now the Belgian forward has decided on what lies in store for him with the Blues moving forward. He will not make any rash decisions despite the difficulties he has had to face in his first season back at the Bridge. Moreover, he is relaxed in the current circumstances and believes that there will be a change in the future.

It is good to know that the 28-year-old centre-forward is being rational at this moment and is not letting his emotion dictate terms. That being said, the striker must start to back up his talk with performances on the field.

That is especially the case following Kai Havertz’s excellent display as a lone striker against the French club. Tuchel believes that Havertz is a better fit for his tactics than Lukaku. Given Chelsea’s outlay on the Belgian last summer, the manager’s admission is rather a damning indictment of our transfer business.

Teammates riding to Lukaku’s defence?

Meanwhile, the former Inter Milan man’s teammates Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva have backed him to get over the current dire situation. Speaking in an interview with Sky Sport Italia (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Silva has backed Lukaku to find his feet in the next couple of games. He said:

“He scored two key goals at the World Cup for us. We’re gonna try help Romelu, as we know his skills and how important he is for our team. Lukaku will be ready for the coming games, I’m sure.”

Azpilicueta also issued his support to Lukaku in an interview with Football.London. The skipper also did the same as the former PSG centre-back by tipping the striker to do good in the future. He said:

“We can’t forget Romelu is a very important player for us – at the Club World Cup, he scored two goals, one in the semi-final and one in the final. The manager made the decision [against Lille] to have him on the bench and play other players, but he will be the first one who will want to show his qualities and I don’t doubt he will be a key player for us.”

With the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool set to take place on Sunday, Lukaku faces a battle to make the starting lineup. Missing out again would only add more fuel to the fire, so it is up to him to convince the Chelsea coach during training sessions in the coming days.

It remains to be seen if Lukaku would rise to the challenge and prove his doubters wrong or not. Let’s hope that he would not be another victim of the “centre-forward curse” at Chelsea.
