Borussia Dortmund keen to keep Erling Haaland amidst Chelsea interest

According to the Spanish newspaper AS (h/t The Mirror), Erling Haaland could be in line to stay at Borussia Dortmund amidst interest from Chelsea and other European clubs. He has become a highly wanted player across Europe after his impressive displays for the Bundesliga side.

Haaland broke onto the scene with RB Salzburg having scored a ridiculous 29 goals and seven assists from just 27 appearances. Dortmund bought him for £17.1m after they had activated his release clause, a deal that has proven to be a steal so far.

The 21-year-old has not slowed down in Germany either, as indicated by his 70 goals and 19 assists from just 69 appearances. With a release clause worth £68million which activates in the summer, it is no wonder that clubs across Europe are eyeing him.

The German club are plotting a plan to offer the Norwegian a big-money contract, which would make him the club’s highest earner. They also plan to remove the low release clause to ward off interest from other European clubs like the Blues.

However, the forward will have to change his current sponsor if such a deal is agreed upon by both parties. He currently has a sponsorship deal with Nike, which he has to rescind in order to agree to a new contract with Puma.

Puma are the Bundesliga club’s long term kit suppliers, and the club chiefs hope to take advantage of their connection with the sportswear giant to keep their prized asset. But, the player is yet to agree to any contracts with the club or the potential new sponsors.

The English club would be hopeful that the striker would not agree to any new terms with Dortmund or Puma. The release clause would be huge money in general, but for a man of his quality, it is a great bargain.

Time will tell what decision Haaland takes ahead of the next season.
