Transfer News: Chelsea could land Raphael Varane for £40m

According to transfer news from Metro, Chelsea could get a chance to sign Raphael Varane for a cut-price fee. Real Madrid have somewhat accepted the fact that they might just lose Varane and are willing to accept bids of around £40m. Manchester United and Chelsea have been the two names who are after him.

Chelsea have a decent group of central defenders at their disposal. The problem, however, is that two of the more reliable names are past the 30-year mark. Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva might be quality defenders but they will need to be replaced in the near future.

Varane has been a stalwart at the back for Real Madrid for almost a decade now and has won loads of trophies during his time at the club. However, the Frenchman is entering the final year of his contract with Los Blancos and is yet to commit his future to the Spanish club.

Real to sell Varane for a discounted price

With time running out and no contract being agreed, Real Madrid have slowly accepted their fate. They are willing to sell the defender at a cut-price deal of around £40m. Real Madrid are in financial problems and are being forced to sell some of their star men. This window is the only chance they have of getting a fee for Varane.

At 28 years of age, Varane fits the category of a prime world-class defender that Chelsea need. He is not only young for a centre-back but also comes with a winning mentality. It remains to be seen how Chelsea proceed in the race for his signature. Nonetheless, this would be one of the statement signings by the club.
