Porto now tipped to host Chelsea vs Manchester City Champions League Final on May 29th

A report by Football.london mentions that discussions between the UK government and UEFA regarding moving the Manchester City vs Chelsea Champions League final to London from Turkey have ‘hit some significant hurdles’.

The Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, was initially scheduled to host the final on 29th May. But things went awry since the UK government decided to add Turkey to the red list.

This means that any English fans travelling there would have to quarantine for 10 days when they return to the UK. In such a circumstance, shifting the UCL final has been considered, with the Wembley Stadium being a possible venue.

The report mentions that Monday’s talks on the matter centred around increasing the stadium capacity and travel exemptions for media, corporate partners, and UEFA personnel.

Porto to host Champions League final?

A report by The Times (h/t Football.london) mentioned that Wembley may not host the final now because the government is unwilling to relax restrictions to the extent requested by the European governing body.

With less than three weeks to go for the final, negotiations are likely to take place soon to solve this matter but now, Porto could host the final after Portugal was moved to the green list by the UK last week. (h/t football.london)

With not long left until the final, several sponsors and corporate partners, including Pepsi, are frustrated at UEFA because of the investments they have already made to accommodate guests and plan the opening ceremony in Istanbul.

But in such situations, money should take a backseat and the safest, most convenient location should be chosen for the fans. By common sense, that would be Wembley, considering its proximity and non-interaction with people of different countries.
