“Rest mentally”- Gary Neville offers advice to Mauricio Pochettino on making Chelsea great again

Gary Neville calls upon Mauricio Pochettino to improve the Chelsea players’ mentality

Gary Neville has offered inbound Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino on how to alter the club’s fortunes. He believes it all starts with altering the squad’s mentality.

Pochettino, who has been chosen as Chelsea’s next permanent manager, will return to the Premier League after a successful but ultimately underwhelming spell at Tottenham Hotspur. Despite also being fired by Paris Saint-Germain, it is fair to say that the Argentine remains a top manager.

The Chelsea board sees him as a long-term manager capable of rescuing West Londoners from the current turmoil. It could prove to be a fruitful association for all parties if it goes according to plan.

The Argentine was fired as manager of Paris Saint-Germain during the 2021–22 season. Meanwhile, Blue’s interim manager Frank Lampard had only one win in nine games.

According to Football.London, Gary Neville has now spoken out about Chelsea’s dismal season and believes the Blues’ players need a mental break. Hopefully, they will get one at the end of the season and reset their fortunes next season.

“I think he needs to change these players’ mentality from where it has been for the last few months and hope the break they get in the summer gives them a rest mentally to come back fresh with new ideas and a new manager.”

Neville has made a valid point here: the players have been physically and mentally exhausted as a result of numerous defeats, which has demoralized them to perform well in subsequent matches. Consistent losses affect you mentally and weaken your trust in your ability to perform efficiently.

Pochettino will have to spark back their sense of self-worth and restore their conviction. Of course, he isn’t going to be able to do all of this in only two or three games; we can expect this to take many months.

Meanwhile, we were satisfactory against Manchester City and had several chances of scoring but spurned them, so a top-class number nine will be required for the coming season. But reinforcement will only help us so much if the mentality too does not evolve.
