Romano says La Liga-linked Chelsea star is waiting to assess the Blues’ manager situation before making decision on future

Chelsea star Marc Cucurella back to Spain in the summer?

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has always been a highly acclaimed full-back, graduating from Barcelona’s infamous La Masia academy. He has thrived under several tacticians with specific demands and has excelled in offensive contributions.

Despite arriving in West London for a fee of around £60 million which was back making him the second most expensive left-back in the summer of 2022 and the hefty expectations that came with such an enormous fee associated with the transfer, he has struggled to find his footing at Stamford Bridge.

His difficulties in finding his form wearing the Chelsea crest are complimented by the tough time that the club is enduring in the ongoing 2023/24 season. Chelsea’s inconsistent campaign means they lie eleventh in the Premier League table. Marc Cucurella has only featured 12 times under the Argentine coach this season and has just returned to the fold following an ankle injury that he sustained in December. However, his future at the Bridge is still up in the air.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano believes that the 25-year-old is one of the players who will be sold by Chelsea in the upcoming summer transfer window despite Cucurella having a contract with the club until 2028. He says that Marc Cucurella could be on his way back to Spain.

Writing on the Daily Briefing, Romano states: “The Chelsea left-back has been linked with a return to La Liga. My understanding is that he is one of the situations to be assessed at the end of the season. Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah and more… these players are waiting to see what Chelsea decide to do in terms of project, tactical plans for next season, the manager situation. Cucurella was available on loan in the final days of August last year but deal with Manchester United collapsed because they wanted to include a break clause for January and Chelsea rejected.”

Marc Cucurella has played in Spain before. He has played for Barcelona, Eibar, and Getafe before he boarded a flight to England and Brighton. This situation can change from now to the conclusion of the ongoing season, as in Ben Chilwell, Chelsea have a left-back who has his injury concerns and is struggling to reach his optimal levels. Any such happenings would give Marc Cucurella another opportunity to salvage a career at Chelsea.

Moreover, Mauricio Pochettino is also under an abundance of pressure as Todd Boehly waits for the conclusion of the ongoing season before deciding on the Argentine’s future at the club. If Pochettino were to leave, Marc could have a fresh opportunity and look at things based on who joins and succeeds the 52-year-old at Chelsea.
