Craig Burley reckons Mauricio Pochettino should have taken his time before taking Chelsea job
Craig Burley feels Mauricio Pochettino has rushed himself into Chelsea’s job and is now bearing the brunt of it, and he feels the Argentine manager is now regretting taking the job this early.
Pochettino was appointed before the start of the season after going through an extensive round of talks with the club’s board. Chelsea were convinced Pochettino is the right man to take charge of this disorganised squad and will change the fortunes of the club.
Fast forward to here, and the Blues are languishing in 11th place in the table, and the inexperience of the squad has been a key issue that has seen them struggle to win the matches. However, aside from their Premier League performance, the Blues have done quite well in domestic cup competitions and are semi-finalists in the FA Cup.
However, Burley feels Pochettino should have taken his time before taking the Chelsea job. Speaking to ESPN, he said:
‘’He thought he could come in and make all the managers make a difference, but thus far he hasn’t really, and now that you see some of the managers leaving and getting fired, he may have been stepping back and putting a stop and taking his time, but he threw himself into it, and he knew where he was getting himself into. And now he is suffering the same fate the other managers were going through.’’
Is Burley right?
Any manager who wished to take charge of this team would have suffered the same fate because this side was cluttered and wasn’t consistent enough to scrape out wins consistently. Burley’s comments make sense at some point because Pochettino is currently in a huge mess, and now, until the end of the season, it will be determined at what level the 52-year-old has transformed the team.
But so far, we can agree that Pochettino has done a decent job because we cannot solely blame him since he can do everything in his power to change the dynamics of players’ playing styles and use them in positions where they will fully flourish, and their vulnerability won’t be exposed in the games.

Players will now have to carry them out on the pitch, and they will undoubtedly encounter criticism if they don’t. Given the young age of the team, any manager would require some time to assemble an elite squad. Maybe the developing process will move more quickly if we bring in more seasoned players next season.
