Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has a message for team-mates after EFL Cup final loss
Speaking after beating Leeds United 3-2 in the FA Cup thanks to a 90th-minute winner from Conor Gallagher, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah talked about how the Blues have come under a tremendous amount of criticism after losing to Liverpool earlier this weekend in the Carabao Cup final with Virgil van Dijk heading home the winner with less than two minutes for extra time to conclude.
Speaking to BBC, Chalobah noted that criticism is a part and parcel of a footballer’s life and it is important for players to channel attention towards themselves rather than listen to the criticism.
“Criticism is part of football and there is always going to be something said – it’s important we focus on ourselves.
“In football there is always a next opportunity to get your spirits up.”
With the Blues now in contention to make another domestic final after seeing themselves through to the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup, there always remains hope for silverware. Mauricio Pochettino’s side will face Championship side Leicester City in the next round of the competition, on 16th March. However, it is also important for Chelsea to regain their momentum in the league where they are struggling to get a string of good results. Their current standing of 11th on the points table is not a reflection of the talent Chelsea have in the squad, but a reflection of how bad things could go if that is not siphoned in the right direction.
Deflect the criticism!
Looking ahead, Chalobah emphasised the significance of maintaining momentum in both domestic competitions. While their FA Cup journey presents an opportunity for further success, Chelsea must also prioritize their league form. Currently languishing in 11th place in the Premier League table, the Blues are aware of the urgency to string together positive results and climb the standings.
For Trevoh himself, the opportunity to start against Leeds United has come opportune. The player has seen himself on the sidelines for a substantial while due to injury issues, and this game marked his first competitive start since May 2023 and first 90 since April 2023. The 24-year-old, with a run of good form from this point onwards, can ensure he stays at the club beyond the summer, as he constantly sees himself linked with an exit.
