Chelsea star David Datro Fofana aims for a fresh start after Union Berlin spell
Chelsea’s 21-year-old forward, David Datro Fofana, has returned to Stamford Bridge following a challenging loan spell at Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
The forward made a total of 17 appearances for the German club, including four in the Champions League. Fofana, who arrived at Chelsea from Molde in January last year for a reported fee of £11m, signed a contract that runs until 2029 (Transfermarkt), with the provision for an additional year. Despite initially showing promise, his time at Union Berlin did not unfold as expected.
Sevilla and Burnley had emerged as potential suitors for Fofana‘s services, with both clubs expressing interest in securing a loan deal for the remainder of the season. On the pitch, Fofana’s contributions were limited, managing to score only two goals and provide one assist during his stint with Union Berlin. The player is now exploring opportunities for a loan move that would offer a reset and an opportunity to rediscover his form and potential.
Now, the opportunity to erase the tough start to the 2023-24 campaign comes up in the form of a loan switch to Burnley where he has the opportunity to impress. Moreover, the fact that he shall play in the Premier League would make a possible transition back to Chelsea much easier than otherwise.
