Chelsea looking to sign yet another French centre-back to their roster

Chelsea are monitoring another French centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo

RMC Sports journalist Fabrice Hawkins via X has confirmed that both Chelsea and Manchester United are keeping tabs on Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo, who is experiencing a breakthrough season in the French Ligue 1.

The 24-year-old defender has been a cornerstone for Nice this campaign, featuring in 14 Ligue 1 matches and significantly bolstering the team’s defense with his performances.

With Thiago Silva expected to leave the club when his contract expires in June 2024 (transfermarkt), Chelsea are eyeing another top defender to reinforce their squad for the upcoming season.

Chelsea is also seeking to offload players like Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr, as they do not fit into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans. Hence, acquiring a new defender for depth becomes crucial for Chelsea, considering their recurrent injury concerns in the squad.

Todibo emerges as an ideal candidate to replace Silva, possessing a comprehensive skill set required for a centre-back. However, the competition for his signature will be fierce, with Manchester United also expressing interest.

United’s need for a solid centre-back is evident due to their limited options in defense. Therefore, securing the services of the Frenchman could turn into a challenging battle between the two clubs.

In the context of modern football, Todibo emerges as an ideal center-back excelling in marking, tackling, interceptions, and dribbling. His exceptional athleticism and pace make him a significant potential asset for any club. Notably, he ranks among the top five European players with the most successful true tackles.

Despite Chelsea boasting decent defensive depth with players like Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, and Wesely Fofana, the addition of the 24-year-old defender would be a considerable enhancement to the squad. His arrival would further fortify Chelsea’s defensive line, making it an even more formidable unit.
