Pochettino sends message Enzo Fernandez ‘needs to understand’ after Chelsea starting XI snub

Maurico Pochettino expects Enzo Fernandez to be more understanding following his absence from the starting XI

Enzo Fernandez was left on the bench ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Sheffield United. The player’s huge price tag doesn’t sit well with his position on the bench. The Argentine arrived at Stamford Bridge from SL Benfica for €121.00m. Chelsea’s bad form seems to have hurdled Enzo’s progression through the ranks.

However, the Argentina World Cup winner still managed to collect minutes under Mauricio Pochettino. The continuous process saw a halt after the latter started having more players at his discretion. The Blues boss now has players like Moises Caceido, Cristopher Nkunku and a few others returned from injuries.

He deployed Moises Caicedo in Enzo’s stead against Blades. As quoted by the club in an official statement, Pochettino spoke about Enzo’s absence from the starting XI.

“When you are in a very busy period, players need to understand that they can play but maybe they also need to rest.”

He further emphasised the right combination of players required for each game. According to Pochettino, each game demands a new set of players, especially when there are many fit players available.

Enzo’s days are about to get difficult

Warming the bench with a hefty price tag on you is not a pleasant experience. Enzo Fernandez has been a regular starter for the West London club until last week. However, that was the period where Pochettino lost several players to injury.

Being snubbed against Sheffield does not mean Enzo has forever lost his place. However, Conor Gallagher’s strong display is a threat to the young Argentine. The supporters also witnessed a fine performance from Moises Caicedo.

The Ecuador international is finally finding his rhythm and Pochettino should not break the rhythm. There are certainly enough opportunities awaiting Enzo. What is important is that he does not get into the bad side of his manager.

Patience is the game now for Fernandez. Chelsea sits 10th on the league table as of now, expecting to climb the position soon enough. The club would not want to waste €121m by keeping him on the bench.
