“A reality check”- Pochettino calls for patience as Chelsea experience yet another defeat, this time vs Everton

Mauricio Pochettino says Chelsea are currently undergoing a long-term project

Mauricio Pochettino claims he is not surprised by Chelsea’ FC’s lack of development this season after they dropped to 12th place in the Premier League following a 2-0 defeat to Everton.

The Blues have now lost seven league games under the 51-year-old and are now closer to relegation to the top four. Pochettino has taken over a side worth around £1 billion.

They now have just five league wins in 16 matches, and each defeat puts further pressure on the former Paris Saint-Germain man. Despite this massive spending, Pochettino says there are plenty of problems to fix and stresses that his job is a long-term process, not a quick fix.

The Toffees’ loss was their second straight setback following a 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the middle of the week. When questioned about Chelsea’s dismal form, Pochettino expressed that this is a worrying sign, but he’s not afraid about his side’s lack of progress and emphasised that it will take time to make things happen, (h/t Daily Mail) He further added:

”No.Anyone who understands football knows this is a new project and a new team. At Chelsea, the expectation is always to win the Premier League. But this is a reality check: we need to fight; we need to be there. If we want to win, we have to be more ruthless. We are not going to win games just because we are Chelsea.’’

Pochettino has emphasised numerous times that we should not anticipate a short project with instant results; rather, this is a long-term project and process. To create a strong, experienced team, we will need a season or two.

Gone were those days when we saw several managers fired right away for not producing results quickly under Roman Abramovich. Things are different under Todd Boehly because he wants to construct a youthful team and allow the manager time to turn things around. We can’t hold Pochettino responsible for this because the team is still very young, we won’t be winning games on a regular basis, and the manager will still need the backing of the supporters during this gradual process.

Things may have turned out differently if Boehly had focused on bringing in some more experienced players during our recruitment process instead of just bringing in a young group. As it is, we will have to get used to more losses than victories.
