David Ornstein touches upon Chelsea’s stance on Thiago Silva’s contract situation

David Ornstein claims Chelsea won’t retain Thiago Silva next season

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), journalist David Ornstein confirms Chelsea has no intention of retaining Thiago Silva next season, whose contract will also run out following the campaign.

The Brazilian centre-back extended his deal by a year last season, and it seems this will be his last campaign as Chelsea will lose one of the best centre-backs.

The former AC Milan player could head back to Brazil to his childhood club. However, the season is far from over and Silva will be crucial to our progress all the way through. For now, there is yet much to be written as far as his Chelsea chapter is considered.

Silva joined the club in 2020 and quickly became a household name at the club, winning the Champions League and becoming an indispensable part of Chelsea’s backline. Despite his age, he continues to function as our leader on the pitch.

He is now 39 and remains the regular starter for the club. But now the Blues will look for his replacement next season when he makes his future decision at the club. The club has four central defenders: Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, and Wesely Fofana. Fofana hasn’t been reliable due to his injuries, so signing a defender will be an objective.

We have a long season ahead of us, and Silva will hope to make some contribution. The London side still has chances to secure a Champions League spot and also has a shot at winning the EFL Cup.

It makes sense for Chelsea to let him go since, in line with their policy, they now wish to invest in more young players. When Silva departs, the team will want to sign the best young centre-back available. However, the player they sign will undoubtedly face pressure to fill in Silva’s void.

It will be sad to see Silva go, despite the criticism he received when we recruited him because of his age but he quickly became fans favourite since joining and proved to be one of the best defensive players in a short period, and his performance was sufficient to win over the fans.
