Chelsea must make a decision on two players in the final year of their contracts

Chelsea duo Thiago Silva and Lucas Bergström are on the verge of seeing their contracts run out

Chelsea are enduring another horrendous season following the takeover by Todd Boehly and Co. They sit 12th on the Premier League table with 19 points out of 16 games. The club went through drastic changes in recent years, where we saw many transfers, managerial shuffles and management changes within the past few seasons. The club lacks stability and is now seeking ways to steady the ship.

As the news comes, their solid centre-back and leader figure Thiago Silva‘s contract expires by the end of the season. Apart from Silva, young goalkeeper Lucas Bergström is also nearing the end of his contract at Stamford Bridge. Amidst all the uncertainties that lie with Mauricio Pochettino, he will now have added pressure to make a call on the future of two stars.

Silva has featured in arguably every game for the Blues this season. His presence is phenomenal and very striking within the young Chelsea squad. On the other hand, Bergström has been nothing more than a presence on the bench. After weighing all the pros and cons, it is pretty evident that while one continues to be a key player, the other is at best a fringe name in our bloated squad.

ASBTF’s opinion

Chelsea are marred by injuries and it is the defence department that’s hurt the most. Ben Chilwell, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, and Reece James are all victims of various niggles this season and have spent time out injured. This leaves Pochettino with a handful of choices and Silva is arguably the strongest leader of them. The Brazilian defender has featured for the Stamford Bridge outfit in every game except for the Everton match.

Needless to say, the Blues suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Merseysiders. This further cements Silva’s position in the starting lineup. The former Paris Saint-Germain skipper turns 40 next year, but his age is not affecting his game. Pochettino has to keep Silva by his side for not just his ability but the leadership skills that can help rally the side.

Lucas Bergström has not featured for the Chelsea senior team ever

Kepa Arrizabalaga’s spot was taken over by Robert Sanchez last summer and the former moved to Real Madrid on a season-long loan. Despite Sanchez getting injured, it remains to be seen if Lucas Bergström will get a chance to feature in a Chelsea game any time soon. Given our bloated squad, it is imperative that non-essential players be cut loose, especially if we are to miss out on another season of UEFA Champions League football.

While SIlva has been a solid player for us, it is no secret that he is not getting any younger. While we do wish the club would extend his deal, it would still make sense if we opted to move on and bring in a long-term replacement. A decision on Bergström is far easier to make. Which way the cookie crumbles next summer remains to be seen.
