John Terry recalls his time with Mohamed Salah and Kevin de Bruyne at Chelsea
Former Chelsea centre-back John Terry relives his days with Mohamed Salah and Kevin de Bruyne at the club and claimed he was disappointed with not treating them well in West London.
Salah only appeared in 19 games and scored two goals while he was at Stamford Bridge, but after leaving, the Egyptian cemented himself and is now regarded as a legend at Liverpool, having scored 196 goals for the team.
Similar observations could be made about the Manchester City star, who did not succeed in becoming an essential member of the Blues alongside Salah.
However, the Belgium midfielder left Chelsea to continue his career elsewhere, and after joining Manchester City, his trajectory changed as he emerged as one of the team’s best midfield players and won a treble.
Terry was among the senior players with the captain’s armband, and the centre-back reflected on his treatment of both players, (h/t Liverpool.Com), and told the Obi One podcast:
“It’s my one disappointment as captain because I think I adapted over time. When those guys were there, I was probably very strong and very disciplined in the group.”
“That was probably the first sign they needed an arm around the shoulder—a sit-down. Could I have maybe helped them settle in? For those two players [De Bruyne and Salah] especially, to the levels they’ve gone to, I’m disappointed in myself as captain; that’s a regret I have.”
What Salah and De Bruyne have achieved at this level is certainly regrettable for us because they didn’t achieve it at Chelsea. What if we believed in them and never allowed them to leave? It would have been an entirely different story then. They are an essential part of their respective clubs, and it’s a good thing because they were once part of us.

As a captain, Terry set a high standard for other players and was undoubtedly one of our best leaders. Salah and the Belgian midfielder were young at the time, and they needed our assistance to succeed, but we let them down. We cannot keep regretting this anymore, and moving on is the best solution.
