Chelsea competing with PL giants for Inter Milan’s star full back

Chelsea competing with Manchester United for Inter Milan full back Denzel Dumfries

Denzel Dumfries is one of the most talented defenders in the world when it comes to his position and his performances for Inter Milan and the Dutch national team have been nothing short of sensational and it comes as no surprise that the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea want to sign him.

The 27-year-old has nine goals and 18 assists in 109 appearances. He joined Inter Milan from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2021. Since then, he has been one of the first names on the team sheet for the Italian side.

A modern fullback in every right, Denzel Dumfries is a much better attacker than he is a defender. That does not mean that he is not adept in that aspect though, but he is much more comfortable going forward.

This is why playing in Inter Milan really suits him. The Italian giants play a 5 at the back system with two wing backs bombing forward and providing width and with the security of three central defenders behind him, the Netherlands international feels at home.

According to Calciomercato (h/t Transfer Talk: Chelsea and Man United eye Dumfries – ESPN), Premier League rivals United and Chelsea both seem keen on signing the talented Dutchman. However, there are quite a few question marks over a move from a Chelsea perspective.

Firstly, Chelsea have club captain Reece James who plays at right-back. He is one of the best in the world going forward and pretty adept in defence. The issue for him though is the fact that he has struggled to stay fit for a run of games for quite some time now.

The Blues also signed Malo Gusto from Olympique Lyon in the summer. The talented young Frenchman has proven to be an asset to the team in the absence of Reece James in the opening weeks of the campaign and looks set to have a huge future here.

Signing Dumfries might mean having one too many players for the same position. We must also remember that we play a back four and it is not very clear how the Dutchman would fit into Chelsea’s tactical setup.

At this point, we would be better off not trying to sign Dumfries. The talented Dutch right-back would only make sense if one our existing options leave and that is not going to happen. You can have him, Manchester United!
