Chelsea face increasing competition for highly-rated midfielder Gabriel Moscardo
Chelsea have rekindled their interest in gifted Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Moscardo, but they face increasing competition from other European clubs.
According to Standard, (h/t The Sun), the midfielder has been valued at around £26 million. The Blues earlier approached Corinthians with £18 million, but their offer was turned down.
Arsenal, Liverpool, and Barcelona are also in the race, and now it will be tough for the Blues to land him unless they meet his asking price. The midfielder decided to remain at the Brazilian club until the end of the season in December before assessing his options.
Chelsea have heavily invested in acquiring Brazilian youngsters, as they signed Andrey Santos, Angelo Gabriel, and David Washington. The Blues also appointed Corinthians’ former chief scout, Allyson Marins, last year as they continue pursuing emerging Brazilian talents.
It is understood that Corinthians won’t entertain any bids for their players as they will have a presidential election on November 25. The Blues aim to finalise their deal as quickly as possible to avoid having to wait until then should another team swoop in.
Barcelona’s financial struggles could prevent them from recuriting Moscardo, while Arsenal and Liverpool remain great threats to Chelsea for his signing.
There are a number of defensive midfielders on the Blues’ roster, which is something they should consider before pursuing him. Moscardo is a top-notch midfield player, so he shouldn’t sign with a squad that doesn’t give him regular football. Yet even if the Blues are successful in signing him, they will most likely loan him out to a Premier League team or any team in Europe so that he can continue to mature.

The process of moving to a new league takes time because you have to get used to the new team’s style of play and build connections with your teammates. Hopefully, Chelsea will be patient and let him grow, but even if we don’t sign him, we still have a lot of options with Moises Caicedo, Lesley Ugochukwu, and Andrey Santos.
