“Contract talks remain ongoing”- Reliable journo gives the latest scoop on stellar Chelsea defensive prospect

Fabrizio Romano reveals Ian Maatsen is yet to agree to a new Chelsea contract

According to Fabrizio Romano, Ian Maatsen and Chelsea held talks in August over the renewal of his contract, but they couldn’t reach an agreement.

This led to the Blues accepting Burnley’s loan offer with an obligation to buy worth £31.5million offer for the left-back. Maatsen turned down the bid as he was keen on remaining in West London and fighting for his spot.

Given that he has yet to agree to a new contract, it has put his future in doubt at Chelsea. Mauricio Pochettino also has Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell as left-back options, a position where there appears to be an abundance of talent at Stamford Bridge.

However, the 21-year-old has mainly come on as a substitute, operating as a winger under the Argentine. Now it remains to be seen if Chelsea once again attempt to sell the player in January if he fails to sign a new deal.

But transfer expert Romano has given a new update on the 21-year-old’s contract situation at Chelsea. Speaking in an exclusive Caught Offside column, he said:

“There have been further reports about Ian Maatsen and his future at Chelsea, so I thought I’d clarify them here. From what I understand, Maatsen spoke to Chelsea in July and August, but there was no agreement over a new deal. That’s why they were ready to sell him to Burnley, but he rejected the chance to go there.”

“Now contract talks remain ongoing, so let’s see what’s going to happen in the next few weeks and months ahead of the January window. Nothing has been decided yet.”

Ian Maatsen rejected Burnley’s offer to remain at Chelsea.

Chelsea were ready to sell him when Burnley made a bid for the Dutchman, but it was Maatsen who rejected the deal. So it makes sense he wants to remain at Chelsea, and then both parties shouldn’t have any issues in reaching an agreement for a new contract. He has also been preferred over Cucurella several times this season, and Pochettino has kept faith in him after being impressed by his performances in pre-season.

However, if he delays his contract extension, then certainly the Blues will once again try to sell him, so it’s better he doesn’t take much time to sign a new deal. But then, as of now, we have little to be worried about in the matter.
