“Always been monitored”- Romano outlines Chelsea interest in Ligue 1 ace

Fabrizio Romano reveals details about the Chelsea pursuit of Rayan Cherki

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea never considered signing Rayan Cherki and he was not their top target for the summer window. The Blues were earlier considering signing the talented midfielder, who was earmarked as a replacement for Christian Pulisic, who left for AC Milan.

The West Londoners were hoping to add another attacking player before the summer window closed; Cherki and Bradley Barcola were among the options. But the latter one joined Paris Saint-Germain, and Cherki is still at Lyon.

But the Blues subsequently ended their quest to sign the French forward due to his attitude problem. The Blues later moved for Manchester City star Cole Palmer in the final days of the window. The English sensation is an excellent prospect and could develop into a gem under the right guidance.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has given an insight into Chelsea and Lyon forward Cherki transfer rumours on his YouTube channel, where he claimed:

“From what I’m told, Chelsea only had one conversation with Lyon to discuss the condition of potential deals for Barcola and Cherki. Chelsea just wanted to be informed but never met Lyon to start negotiations or something concrete. They never considered him a target or the top player on the list. He’s always been monitored, but we know that Chelsea follow the best talent in the world.”

Cherki is a talented midfielder and he would have been a nice addition if we had signed him. But since Cherki had some attitude issues, it’s good that we did not sign him and stayed away from him. Moreover, had we acquired him we wouldn’t know how long he and Barcola might have taken to hit their stride in the Premier League.

Palmer, who has Premier League experience, is a reliable player, and Chelsea made a smart choice to sign him. Such a player deserves to be given time at Chelsea because had he stayed at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola would have played him as a backup because Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva were already filling his position.
