Chelsea handed major blow as former star leaves mentoring role at Cobham

Claude Makelele has left his role as a mentor to young Chelsea players

Chelsea hit with another bad news as the Blues will now have to look for a new mentor for young players as former player Claude Makelele has left the role at Stamford Bridge.

According to Gianluca DiMarzio, (h/t Daily Mail), the Frenchman has agreed to terminate his contract with Chelsea. The 50-year-old took on the role in 2019 when Frank Lampard was appointed the club’s new manager.

Makelele appeared in the Legends of Europe match at Stamford Bridge, where the Blues recorded a 4-0 win. The 50-year-old was one of the best in business during his playing days at Chelsea. Makelele made 217 appearances for Chelsea during his five years at Stamford Bridge.

The former midfielder has worked with youth sides who are out on loan and provides them with regular feedback on their performance after the game. The West Londoners will have to look for Makelele’s replacement for the youth side.

Meanwhile, the Blues’ senior side are enduring a dismal start to the new campaign under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, and their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa puts them in 14th place in the Premier League. Their only league win has come against newly promoted Luton Town.

The exact reason why Makelele left as a mentor of young players isn’t known. But given that he was one of the best players during his playing days and had a great deal of ball expertise, it is unquestionably bad news for Chelsea because they have lost a legend who played for some of the best sides in world football as a player.

It’s unfortunate to see him go because he was one of the best midfielders and had a winning mindset. He might have developed young players to play for the senior team in the future, but with his departure, the Blues will need to find a successor now.

We are already dealing with a poor start to the new season and with such figures leaving the club is certainly bad news for Chelsea. All we can hope is things get back to normal and Mauricio Pochettino turns things around sooner rather than later.
