Jamie Carragher expects Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino to win silverware amid comparison with Jurgen Klopp

In his latest column for The Telegraph (subscription required), Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has claimed that new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino does not have excuses to not win trophies at Stamford Bridge.

Former Liverpool defender also compared Pochettino with the Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and how the latter won big stuff at Anfield while the former stumbled at Tottenham.

This is a different kettle of fish though. Pochettino is expected to get the resources to build a team that can take Chelsea back to challenging for league titles and European cups.

Here’s a snippet of the column written by Carragher on the Argentinian and the job he has in West London (h/t The Telegraph):

“Mauricio Pochettino used to be as likely as Jurgen Klopp to dethrone Pep Guardiola. Now he leads Chelsea into a new Premier League season needing to prove he is in the same class as his Liverpool rival. I have always been a fan of his [Pochettino], which is why I believe he was the obvious Chelsea appointment.

“That said, there will be no excuses if he does not bring silverware to his new club. Incredible resources are available and if he builds a side of similar quality the investment in the squad so far suggests there will be no holding back in pushing on to get over the line.”

Keeping all things in mind, although the first game of the season does not decide anything, it can offer a glimpse of what is to come. For that reason, Chelsea playing Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday has the makings of a game that can give us an idea of where Pochettino and Klopp are with their respective teams.

While that will be the first game the former will take charge of as a Chelsea boss, the latter is embarking on a new journey with a refreshed squad at Anfield.

If Chelsea can beat Liverpool and make them doubt about the future, it would be the first step towards getting things right for Pochettino. He can then focus on having a consistent season with no European football and hope to take the Blues into the Champions League next year onwards.

As we saw during his time at Tottenham, the 51-year-old is not afraid to take over a young team and develop them into world-beaters. He has a similar situation here with Chelsea possessing a fairly young squad with plenty of raw talent.
