“We are working hard”- Mauricio Pochettino gives verdict on Chelsea’s pursuit of Moises Caicedo

Mauricio Pochettino gives verdict on Chelsea’s pursuit of Moises Caicedo amid Liverpool hijack threat

Chelsea’s Mauricio Pochettino gave a coy response when asked about Chelsea’s pursuit of Liverpool target Moises Caicedo earlier today in his press conference.

The Blues’ pursuit of the Ecuador international is no secret. But the Reds recently secured a British-record £110million transfer fee agreement with Brighton for buying the 21-year-old.

That jolted Chelsea into action. According to Fabrizio Romano, Caicedo has told Liverpool he only wants Chelsea and is waiting for the west London giants to make a bid for him.

Poch was always going to be asked about the former Independiente del Valle player in his presser. But he was tight-lipped, as expected. He said, via Football.London:

“I never talk about players who don’t belong to us. We are working hard to add more players to the squad and if we have some update to make for you the club will do.

“At the moment I will not talk about players who do not play for us. Like any club, we are trying to add more quality to reinforce our squad With Paul, Laurence and the owners, the relationship is really good.”

That is a good, steady response to a very, very messy situation. Liverpool’s bid has truly doubled the Blues’ headache because not only is it significantly higher than what we have offered, but it has also been accepted by Brighton.

Pochettno didn’t outright rule out any transfer. He gave nothing away in his response but there seems to be a feeling that he is just being tight-lipped before the good news breaks for Chelsea fans.

Caicedo is needed desperately to strengthen the No. 6 position after a midfield exodus that has seen a huge clearout at Stamford Bridge this summer. It is good news that the Ecuadorian star wants Chelsea over the Reds.

All that remains is for us to hold up our end of the bargain in this. It is not a good look for us that we have left it so late but now that we are in this situation, it is best to do what we can and avoid an embarrassment.
