Romano: Belgian side close to signing 19-year-old Chelsea player on loan

Belgian side Eupen close in on a loan deal to sign Chelsea keeper Gabriel Slonina

As per a tweet from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Belgian club KAS Eupen are closing in on a season-long loan deal to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina.

It is revealed that the agreement between all parties is on the verge of being reached. Slonina will play regularly next season which would be handy for his experience.

The 19-year-old is in the long-term plans for Chelsea. He signed for the Blues from Chicago Fire last August before going on a short-term loan back to the aforementioned club till the end of the calendar year.

Eupen is a top-flight Belgian club that finished 15th in the Jupiler Pro League last season. Playing for them would give Slonina a chance to play for a top-division club in a league in Europe.

If the 19-year-old has a good campaign there, he might be in contention to feature for the Chelsea first team next season onwards. The Blues currently have Kepa Arrizabalaga and Marcus Bettinelli fighting for the number one spot. The former is expected to start the season as of now.

But, we know that Kepa isn’t very secure in goal. There was a reason why Chelsea replaced him with Edouard Mendy three years ago. With Mendy gone now, the Spaniard has automatically leapt back in the pecking order.

So, while it is important for Slonina to do well in his loan spell at Eupen, Kepa must do well as the number one in goal for the Blues next season. Another sketchy campaign for the latter should be curtains for him as a Chelsea player in due course of time.
