Journo: Chelsea ‘monitoring’ 29-year-old Manchester City star

Chelsea ‘monitoring’ Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte is being monitored by Chelsea in the ongoing transfer window, according to journalist Rudy Galetti on Twitter.

The Blues are keeping tabs on the Spain international’s situation at the Sky Blues. As things stand, the centre-back could leave the Etihad Stadium side this summer.

The 29-year-old is tied down to the Cityzens until June 2025. To that end, Pep Guardiola’s team want around £30 million to part ways with him.

However, the Blues are not the only team interested in Laporte. Juventus also have the defender on their radar. The Old Lady have been keeping an eye on the Spaniard since the summer of 2021.

Laporte to Chelsea?

City signed the 29-year-old in January 2018 from Athletic Bilbao. The centre-back has been a key player for the Sky Blues over the years. But in recent seasons, he has fallen down the pecking order. Injuries have not helped the 29-year-old’s cause either.

Guardiola has an abundance of talent in the backline at his disposal. The Cityzens have the likes of Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji in their ranks. They are also eyeing RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol.

As for Chelsea, we signed Kalidou Koulibaly last summer. Unfortunately, after an underwhelming spell at the Stamford Bridge side, the Senegalese was sold to Al Hilal recently.

Wesley Fofana also arrived in the summer of 2022. But the French national has struggled to gain rhythm here, largely due to injury. Thiago Silva, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah can also be called upon by Mauricio Pochettino for now. Laporte would, however, be an upgrade on most of the names we have here.

Marc Cucurella has been poor and Ben Chilwell, injury-prone. Laporte, in that case, can also be an option to play as a defensive left-back.

Laporte is an experienced defender who has showcased his talent in the Premier League. The West London club were poor in defence last season. However, will the Blues opt to pursue the Spaniard’s signature this summer to fix the issues at the back? Only time will tell.
