Inter Milan and Chelsea are apparently in discussions over the future of veteran Spanish defender Cesar Azpilicueta.
He signed a two-year deal last summer at a time when Chelsea lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to free transfers. He has now been here for 11 years and is the captain of the club since 2019.
But it seems the Blues are ready to dispose of him now that they have signed multiple centre-backs under Todd Boehly. According to journalist Matteo Moretto of Spanish outlet Relevo, the Blues and Inter have held ‘many conversations’ for the player.
Azpilicueta is apparently ready to move to Inter Milan. And why wouldn’t he be? There is very little chance that he gets a look-in under Mauricio Pochettino.
We have Kalidou Koulibaly, Thiago Silva, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah in central defense. Add to that Levi Colwill’s grand return after a superb season at Brighton & Hove Albion.
‘But what if Reece James gets injured again?’ you may ask. We will have Malo Gusto for that from next season. Essentially, Azpi is now expendable.
After over a decade’s service to the Blues, the time seems to have come for him to leave. Inter would be a good move for him, considering they are a giant in European football and could have a place for him in their backline.
Chelsea fans would, however, feel that Azpi should have gotten a proper farewell before he left the club. Bear in mind, the 33-year-old’s move to I Nerazzurri isn’t done yet, but there is no reason why any party should object to it.
