Chelsea ‘weighing up’ move for 21-year-old Real Madrid defender

Chelsea are interested in signing Rafa Marin from Real Madrid Castilla

Chelsea are ‘weighing up a move’ for Real Madrid Castilla’s defender Rafa Marin from their youth academy. As per Spanish outlet AS, (h/t Express) Chelsea and RB Leipzig are both keeping an eye on the 21-year-old’s situation despite Marin’s intention to remain at Real Madrid Castilla.

However, there are still some doubts about his future if he will remain at the youth academy beyond the summer window. The 21-year-old has one year left on his contract, and there has been no offer for a contract extension.

On top of that, Nacho Fernandez’s extension has prevented his move to the senior team. Could he move elsewhere to get more playing time even if it means leaving a humongous establishment like Real Madrid? Only time will tell.

Meanwhile, the Blues are stacked with defenders at the moment, as they have the likes of Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah, and Levi Colwill. But Silva and Chalobah have been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer window.

The departure of Kalidou Koulibaly could force the club to look for a replacement for the former Napoli centre-back. Marin could play for the senior team if the west Londoners are successful in signing him, and the Blues have been keeping an eye on his position for quite some time.

The 21-year-old can provide us depth in the event that on or more defenders leave this season. Moreover, he could be a smart long-term investment if he fulfils his potential in SW6, thereby multiplying his valuation.

The young player played 36 games for Castilla as a regular starter, contributing two goals and an assist. He will have the possibility of becoming better under Mauricio Pochettino and perhaps have an opportunity to make an impact on the senior team.

Given that Real Madrid also have Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, Nacho Fernandez, and David Alaba, who has been playing as a centre-back under Carlo Ancelotti, his chances of playing for the club’s senior team seems minimal. At Chelsea, he would have owners and a manager committed to building a young team and giving opportunities to youngsters.
