As per the Athletic (subscription required), Villarreal striker Nicolas Jackson has completed his medical ahead of the move to Chelsea this summer window.

The report reveals that the Blues are paying just over the release clause of the player, which is €35m. He is all but set to become the first signing of the club in Mauricio Pochettino’s reign.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has updated that the striker will sign an eight-year deal with Chelsea until the summer of 2031. It is in sync with how the club has signed young players with big contracts under the Todd Boehly regime.

Jackson has been at Villarreal, making his senior debut during the 2022/23 season. He scored 13 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions with just over 2000 minutes of playing time (Transfermarkt).

The Senegal international possesses good pace to trouble defenders with runs in behind. He has a good in him, can dribble past defenders with ease, and is physically strong as well.

Because he is still young, one can expect Jackson not to be a finished article at the moment. But he is getting there considering how well he did in his first season as a senior team player at Villarreal.

What Chelsea can hope is that the 22-year-old continues his development at Stamford Bridge and gets better the more he plays here.

The influence of Pochettino, who is one of the best managers at enhancing the level of a young player, could be vital in the coming years.

The other hope is that this is only the first signing Chelsea are making this summer. They could do so by adding midfielders and seeing how the squad shapes up before the pre-season takes centre stage.
