Chelsea considering Milan raid to fix key defensive weakness

Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino are considering a move for AC Milan star Mike Maignan

According to the Telegraph (subscription required), Chelsea are considering making a move for France and AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan during the summer transfer window.

The report states that this consideration is taking place despite Mauricio Pochettino’s willingness to start Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal for the next season.

Maignan’s contract with Milan runs until the summer of 2026 (Transfermarkt). The former Lille stopper is now France’s number one following the retirement of Hugo Lloris.

The 27-year-old kept 10 clean sheets in 29 appearances in all competitions in the 2022/23 season. He has been in great form for both club and country.

Coming back to the option Chelsea have – which is Kepa, not much can be said about the Spaniard. He was dropped from the team by Frank Lampard in 2021 to install Edouard Mendy in goal.

The latter did well that season and had an excellent 2021/22 campaign as well. But, his form dipped this season, and is now on the verge of leaving the club as well.

Kepa was given another chance in a Chelsea shirt by Graham Potter last season, but the Spaniard did not fill anyone with great confidence.

He can play out from the back but is a susceptible shot-stopper and does not command his box well, something which is important to do in the Premier League, or any league for that matter.

So, unless Chelsea and Pochettino have nowhere to go, they can start with Kepa next season. However, if the possibility of getting a goalkeeper of Maignan’s ilk is there, it should be grabbed with both hands.

The Frenchman is a dominant goalkeeper who saves shots, commands his box, and can play out from the back. He has already shown his ability at Milan and would be a superb resource for us.
