AC Milan resume talks to sign 27-year-old versatile Chelsea star

AC Milan have rekindled their interest in Chelsea star Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Italian giants AC Milan are once again in the race to sign Ruben Loftus-Cheek after earlier abandoning their pursuit of the Chelsea midfielder.

As per Sports Italia, there have been new contacts between Milan and Chelsea. This comes following the departure of star midfielder Sandro Tonali who is Newcastle United bound. The Italian ace’s departure leaves behind a void in the Milan midfield that the club must now address.

Milan legend Paolo Maldini had been in talks with the Blues for the signing of Loftus-Cheek but was later fired by club’s board. That interest is now set to be reignited.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have set a £21 million price tag for the 27-year-old. However, a deal might not be straightforward as Milan were unconvinced by the England international due to his age. While the Blues star might not be young, he is in his prime and should offer many years of service.

Loftus-Cheek will be one of midfielders to depart the Blues this summer if Milan pays his asking price. Mateo Kovacic is Manchester City bound, while Mason Mount is also leaning towards an exit.

Loftus-Cheek barely played during the past season and was often used as a substitute. With regular minutes far from guaranteed, it is in his best interests to rebuild a career elsewhere.

The amount of expertise Loftus-Cheek possesses in the middle of the pitch will undoubtedly help the Serie A club shore up their midfield. More so, his versatility to don different hat also makes him a utility man of sorts.

Replacing Tonali will not be easy but Loftus-Cheek will do well to take the opportunity to get his career back on track. Moving to the San Siro will see him reunite with former Blues star Olivier Giroud and Fikayo Tomori. Both players have enjoyed a new lease of life in Italy and Loftus-Cheek could very well take heart from their success.
