Arch rivals keen to raid Chelsea for out-of-favour senior star

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to replace Hugo Lloris by signing Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy

As per the Sun (h/t Metro), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the coming summer transfer window.

Spurs are set to lose their long-time number-one Hugo Lloris at the end of this season, hence they are in the market for a new shot-stopper.

A few days ago, Irish Independent linked them with a move for Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher, but Jurgen Klopp has shut down the talks of the Irish keeper leaving Anfield this summer.

Mendy, who is not the first-choice keeper at Chelsea anymore, would be looking to leave the club. Although his current contract at Stamford Bridge lasts until the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt), he rejected a new contract offer late last year, labelling it as ‘disrespectful‘.

The Senegal international was one of the best keepers in Europe for the last two seasons. He was the key reason behind Chelsea’s success in the Champions League in 2021.

But, the loss of form and managers picking Kepa Arrizabalaga, a player who he replaced in September 2020, ahead of him may not have been sitting well.

Now, when Frank Lampard started him against Nottingham Forest last week, he was at fault for the first goal. The confidence is down and a change of scenery may do wonders for the 31-year-old.

While it is not cool to sell one of your assets to a city rival, the goalkeeper is one position where a trade like this can happen.

Especially in this situation where the player is not a regular starter at his current club, it would make no sense for Chelsea to pick and choose where his next destination should be.

If Mendy leaves in the summer, we wish him all the best and remember his heroics during the 2020/21 season. As long as we can bring in an able replacement, selling Mendy is something we can live with.
