Bayern Munich pondering a move for out-of-favour 31-year-old Chelsea star

Bayern Munich are pondering a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy

As per Fichajes (h/t Mirror), German giants Bayern Munich are pondering a move for out-of-favour Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the summer.

Mendy’s contract at Stamford Bridge runs until the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt). He was offered a new deal by Chelsea late last year, but the Senegalese international rejected it, citing the wage offer as ‘disrespectful‘.

Since then, the feeling is that the former Rennes keeper will leave the Blues after the end of this season. He has anyway been downgraded to the number two spot this season, with Kepa Arrizabalaga playing over him.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel, who was the Chelsea manager when Mendy was starting every game and doing well, wants to reunite with the 31-year-old in the German capital.

A few days ago, Daily Mail reported that the incoming Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino will look to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer as there are doubts about the future of Kepa and Mendy. Marcus Bettinelli recently signed a new deal with the club. He might be the backup option to the new stopper next season onward.

As of now, it feels like the relationship between Mendy and Chelsea is at an unrepairable stage. It would be better to part ways rather than prolonging the agony.

Having seen the 31-year-old doing well under Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, the latter might bring the best out of the former at Bayern as well.

Among the goalkeepers linked with Chelsea are Brentford’s David Raya and Porto’s Diogo Costa. If Mendy leaves, it would be interesting to see in which direction the Blues hierarchy looks to sign the new number one of the team.
