According to Evening Standard, Chelsea are to meet Inter Milan to discuss the future of Romelu Lukaku and the potential signing of goalkeeper Andre Onana.
The Blues officials will fly to Italy next week to get the meetings done regarding these topics. Lukaku, who is currently on loan at Inter, will come to Stamford Bridge in the summer once his loan deal expires.
The other report at Evening Standard has revealed that the Belgian international wants to stay in Italy but will face a fight to convince the Nerazzurri to keep him.
Inter are under financial debt to offload players in the coming window to balance the books. Sending Lukaku back to Chelsea would help with that. Hence, the agenda of the 29-year-old’s future is on top of the list when the officials of both clubs meet.
The other thing on the agenda is the possibility of signing Onana. Chelsea may offer Kepa Arrizabalaga or Edouard Mendy in return to make it a swap deal, but Inter may want to sell the former Ajax keeper for a transfer fee because of the reasons mentioned above.
With Chelsea closing in on the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as their new permanent manager, it remains to be seen whether the Argentine would be willing to work with Lukaku or sign another striker to start the revival next season.
Former Blues boss Graham Potter wanted to sell Kepa and Mendy. The latter may leave the club anyway after rejecting the new contract offer, deeming it as disrespectful.
It is clear to see that if Chelsea are to challenge for the big trophies again, getting a top-class stopper should be right on top of the requirements.
Let’s see how the meeting with the Inter officials goes. On paper, offloading the Belgian striker and getting in Onana will seem brilliant.
