Graham Potter insists Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang still an “important” player for Chelsea

Chelsea manager Graham Potter has insisted that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is still an “important” player for Chelsea, with a role to play going forward.

The 33-year-old signed for the Blues in the summer of 2022 from Barcelona. However, the striker has struggled to settle in at the Stamford Bridge side and showcase his quality on a consistent basis.

In recent weeks, the Gabonese has hardly featured for Chelsea. He was also left out of our Champions League squad by the English manager.

But speaking to the media via Metro, Potter still has faith in Aubameyang. The gaffer has been impressed by the striker’s attitude and feels his situation could change.

“Of course, Pierre is in our squad, he remains an important player for us, he’s worked hard, he knows the situation at the moment. Nothing’s set in stone, his attitude has been really, really good. We’ll make an assessment as we go forward.”

The Blues have had an underwhelming season up until now. We have not been our best in the Premier League. The Stamford Bridge side are also out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Chelsea also lost to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Karim Adeyemi’s goal handed the home side a 1-0 victory. However, we had done well in the game but could not take our chances.

Not being clinical has been the theme at the Stamford Bridge side in the current campaign. Kai Havertz has led the line on the majority of occasions. However, the German leaves a lot to be desired in front of goal.

We have invested heavily in the forward line in the last two transfer windows. However, David Datro Fofana is the only other number nine the Blues have signed apart from Aubameyang.

The 33-year-old has made 17 appearances in all competitions for the West London club, scoring three goals and providing one assist. Hopefully, for the remainder of the season, Potter is able to help the 33-year-old find his best form to give the club a chance at challenging for a top-four spot.
