Mason Mount rejected a new Chelsea contract offer a week before flying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea midfielder and England international Mason Mount rejected a new contract worth more than £200,000, a week before flying for the World Cup in Qatar.

The midfielder sees his current contract expire in 2024 and the two parties have been in negotiations over a new contract for some time now. There is still no breakthrough and the talks will now resume after Christmas.

It is believed that the 23-year-old’s representatives are seeking a contract similar to Raheem Sterling who earns £300,000-a-week at the west London club.

Mount, a Cobham graduate, broke into the senior team in 2019 during Frank Lampard’s reign. The England international has spent time on loan at Vitesse and Derby County, with the latter proving to be a very successful one.

Since breaking into the first team, the 23-year-old has established himself as a regular and was a trusted player for Thomas Tuchel too. Things have not changed for him under Graham Potter, with the midfielder being one of the guaranteed starters for the club.

While his form has been questionable this season, the England midfielder still remains a crucial player for the club. His presence in the build-ups and key passes that start counter-attacks cannot be expressed in statistics.

The midfielder is currently in Qatar and has featured in both games for his country so far. Rivals Liverpool along with Juventus are interested in the midfielder and decent performances in the tournament could increase the number of suitors.

A fan favourite at the Bridge, it will be wise for the Blues to not rush and keep a calm mind. We still have time to negotiate a new deal with the player and for now, the club should see the midfielder’s performance at the World Cup and prepare a new offer accordingly.

He’s good, but he’s not that good for the club to shower him with money. Hopefully, a sensible compromise can be reached between the two parties.
