Transfer News: Chelsea have made a €50 million offer for Edson Alvarez

Chelsea have made a €50 million offer for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez. This is according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Thomas Tuchel is looking for reinforcements after such an underwhelming start to their new season. It seems after the defensive reinforcements, midfield is in need of new faces. And rightly so.

The Blues were simply outplayed by Southampton in their previous game. After getting off to a good start this season, the west London club simply have not been good enough. Now, Tuchel has identified a defensive midfielder to help his side in the middle of the park.

Alvarez, a Mexican international, primarily plays as a defensive midfielder. The 24-year-old is also capable of playing as a centre-back whenever required. Such a trait is sure to impress Tuchel who likes to have solid players at the back.

Jorginho cannot play as a defensive midfielder, as clearly shown in the last match. The Italian is not able to stop counter-attacks, like N’Golo Kante. The Frenchman has been out injured and his absence is clearly being felt on the pitch.

Conor Gallagher was expected to fill in Kante’s shoes during his absence. But, the English midfielder has failed miserably in that task. The player has been below par in every match that he has played and was even sent off against Leicester City earlier this month.

It is clear that a deep lying defensive midfielder is needed. Chelsea fans have long demanded that the club sign a new midfielder. And it is looking likely that their side could now bring in a new face in the middle of the park after all.

Chelsea are interested in Edson Alvarez.

But time is not on their side. The deadline day is less than 48 hours away and the Blues will have to hurry if they want the 24-year-old to play for their side this season. An experienced player, he could be the long-term successor to Kante.

More Chelsea News:

The Dutch window closes before the English window. That means if a move goes through, Ajax will have very less time to sign a replacement. This could play a big factor in the transfer of the midfielder. With the clock ticking, it remains to be seen if a deal can be agreed between the two clubs for the 24-year-old.
