According to Metro, Chelsea manager Graham Potter has given his seal of approval for the appointment of Christoph Freund as the club’s new sporting director.
The Blues are closing in on signing the RB Salzburg man, who worked in various roles for the Austrian club since 2006. The latest from Fabrizio Romano on this subject is that the 45-year-old will be signing the contracts to be unveiled by Chelsea in the next few days.
With the sporting director spot being vacant during the summer transfer window, co-owner Todd Boehly stepped up and worked as an interim in that role to lead the club’s transfer operations.
The American is keen on implementing the multi-club model at Chelsea, something which is synonymous with the Red Bull model. He held talks with Freund last week when Salzburg played the Blues at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League. Now, it seems as if the deal is done.
The other condition put up by the Blues’ owners was hiring someone who has a background in implementing data-based scouting, recruitment of players and more. The Austrian fits that bill perfectly.
Freund has an excellent record of spotting talents from all over the world. He was the one who unearthed Erling Haaland from Molde before signing him and then selling him to Borussia Dortmund at a hefty profit.
Sadio Mane, Dayot Upamecano, Naby Keita and Marcel Sabitzer are some of the other big names brought up by Salzburg which was overseen by the 45-year-old.
Whether this appointment is good or not will be known to us in the future, but it is good to see Boehly working overtime to get a person who can handle most football-related operations at the club so that there is a link between him and the manager.
