According to the Mirror, Barcelona ‘cannot even register’ Sergio Aguero at the club as a new signing due to financial issues and in the meantime, Chelsea have been ‘mooted’ to make a move.
The Blues were also interested in signing the Argentine forward earlier this summer when his Manchester City contract expired. However, Aguero chose the opportunity to join Barcelona as a free agent.
One of the reasons behind his move was to play alongside international teammate and six-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi. But the club has since clarified that the 34-year-old Barcelona legend will not be staying at the club beyond this summer.
“Despite having reached an agreement between FC Barcelona and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it cannot be formalised due to economic and structural obstacles. Given this situation, Lionel Messi will not continue linked to FC Barcelona.”
That threw Aguero’s future up in the air, with the report tipping Chelsea to make a potential move for the former Atletico Madrid hitman this summer.
However, he has vowed to stay at Barcelona for at least this season. Aguero has been quoted by Sport (h/t Mirror) as saying, “Don’t worry, you have me all year long”.
While Aguero’s potential signing would have been a welcome addition, it is nothing for Blues fans to be too worried about. The club is already on the verge of signing Romelu Lukaku after agreeing a mammoth £97.5million fee.
And at 33, the Argentine wouldn’t have been a long-term asset anyway. Instead, it is wiser for Thomas Tuchel to distribute vital minutes to the up and coming Armando Broja.
