According to the Mirror, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has decided not to sell star striker Timo Werner this summer amid interest from La Liga bigwigs Real Madrid.
Werner arrived at Chelsea last summer from RB Leipzig in a big-money move but did not enjoy the best of the debut campaigns in London. While he may have finished as the joint top-scorer for the Blues, the 25-year-old was guilty of missing several gilt-edged chances throughout the course of the campaign, which hurt Chelsea on occasion.
Werner ended the season with a tally of 12 goals and 15 assists from 52 matches in all competitions. While he did well to create that many goals, his own tally was underwhelming, especially considering the prolific campaign he had gone through with RB Leipzig before sealing a transfer to Chelsea.
Indeed, the 25-year-old striker scored at a rate of one goal every 319 minutes in his debut season with Chelsea, which is nowhere near good enough from a premiere frontman. Nevertheless, Werner had emerged as a potential transfer target for La Liga heavyweights heading into the summer transfer window, according to The Sun.
However, Chelsea manager Tuchel has decided to veto any potential sale of Werner, as he believes that the German international will have a significant part to play for the team in the upcoming season. (h/t Mirror)
As it is, Tammy Abraham is already staring at an uncertain future at Chelsea, while Olivier Giroud is also not sure of staying at the Bridge despite the club triggering a one-year extension on his deal. So even if Chelsea do bring in another striker, it is important that Werner is not allowed to leave.
