Chelsea have released a statement (h/t The Independent) after West Bromwich Albion striker, Callum Robinson, was the victim of racism following his team’s 5-2 win at Stamford Bridge.
The unfortunate racist attacks on social media have occurred after Robinson’s brace was decisive in putting Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start as a Chelsea manager to end.
The Irishman scored his team’s third and fifth goal as the 19th-placed West Brom came away with a shock win on the afternoon. In response to the racist attacks against the 26-year-old, West Brom have contacted the authorities.
The club got in touch with West Midlands Police over the abuse, rightly described as ‘disturbing’ by the club. (h/t The Independent)
In response to this, Chelsea’s statement expectedly took a strong stand against racism. It read:
“Chelsea FC is disgusted with posts on social media this evening targeting West Bromwich Albion player Callum Robinson. Chelsea FC finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour totally unacceptable.”
It ended by declaring that the club will take actions against the fans involved in this incident.
“Racism has no place at this club and where there is sufficient evidence of a Chelsea season ticket holder or member involved in such behaviour, we will take the strongest possible action against them.”
It is sad to see this incident still happening in football. Racism, like in society, is proving tough to eradicate completely from football.
But if clubs join hands, like West Brom and Chelsea have done here, then the beautiful game will gradually become a sport where everyone is seen equal and is free from such vile, backward acts of racism.
