According to news from Daily Star, Mateo Kovacic hit back at Porto star Pepe over his digs at Chelsea. Post the quarter-final draw, Pepe took shots at Chelsea claiming that the Blues were celebrating on being drawn with Porto and also had some comments about our expensively assembled squad.
Porto stunned Juventus in the last round and despite that, they were somewhat seen as the more favourable side to get in the draw. They were eventually paired with Chelsea which somewhat made the latter outright favourites.
Pepe claimed that it was public knowledge that Chelsea players celebrated the draw. However, his former Real Madrid teammate quickly quelled those digs.
“No, [and that’s] strange to hear that from Pepe because I played with him for three years. So I don’t know what he means or if he actually said it. But of course not. Me, I didn’t celebrate because when I played before with Real Madrid I know that in these stages there are no lucky opponents or bad opponents. This is a tough draw.
Kovacic also refuted the fact that Chelsea’s expensive squad would be the deciding factor. He felt that whatever happens on the pitch will decide things and Chelsea are well prepared for the game tonight.
Chelsea were jolted with a shock loss against West Brom in the last game and that could be impactful in how they play against Porto. The Portuguese outfit are tricky and can pack a punch if we’re not careful. Chelsea will have to make sure they are not complacent.
