Leicester City identify Kaser Schmeichel replacements amidst Chelsea interest

According to the Mirror, Leicester City are readying for life in case star goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel leaves the club this summer.

The Danish international, who has impressed at the King Power Stadium, has been touted as a prospective replacement for under-fire Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Although the Foxes are keen to keep the 33-year-old, they are already preparing contingency plans. The man identified to potentially replace Schmeichel is Sevilla keeper Sergio Rico. (h/t Mirror)

Kasper Schmeichel on Chelsea’s radar

The 26-year-old is currently on loan at Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain. According to the report, Leicester believe an agreement can be reached this month.

Rico played the last 15 minutes of PSG’s incredible Champions League quarterfinal win over Atalanta. Currently behind first-choice keeper Keylor Navas, the Spaniard understands that a permanent move to the Parc des Princes is off the table. (h/t Mirror)

This should prove to be a boon for Chelsea who are monitoring Schmeichel. The goalkeeping position has been a major cause of concern for Frank Lampard this season.

Frank Lampard is not convinced by Kepa Arrizabalaga

Kepa’s erratic form has seen Lampard drop him in favour of reserve custodian Willy Caballero. In fact, the Argentine was preferred for some of Chelsea’s biggest games towards the end of the campaign.

Schmeichel is open to the idea of joining a side that can offer him Champions League football. We however face competition from Manchester United who are also keeping tabs on Schmeichel.

Son of the legendary United skipper Peter Schmeichel, the chance to follow in his father’s footsteps could be something he would not want to pass.

Willy Caballero has stepped in for Kepa Arrizabalaga this season

David de Gea is the number one at Old Trafford. With Dean Henderson and Sergio Romero also at the club, Schmeichel’s position is hardly guaranteed.

He can however expect to get more opportunities at Chelsea. Despite being 33, Schmeichel remains one of the top shot-stoppers in the whole league.

Schmeichel is a proven match-winner with a Premier League winners medal to his name. Unfortunately, he is not likely to be a long term solution for us.

Chelsea should pursue him provided we can sign him on the cheap. Signing him also gives us more time to search for a long term number one as Schmeichel nears the end of his career.
